nexus one: Google hangs up on Nexus One store

Labels:

Google is shutting down the online store it launched with much fanfare in January to sell the Nexus One smartphone, the technology giant said on Friday.Google had hoped the direct sales initiative for what was widely called the “Google phone” would launch a new business model for the U.S. cellphone industry, by persuading buyers to purchase phones independently from the major carriers.

Currently the vast majority of cellphone purchases are subsidized by the carriers in return for customers locking in to a two year contract. The device is sold unlocked (not restricted to use on a single network provider). Google currently offers it for use on the T-Mobile and AT&T networks in the United States; a version for use on Vodafone (European) networks was announced on 26 April 2010, available in the UK on 30 April 2010.

On March 16, 2010, the Nexus One device became available on the Google web store for sale in Canada for use with Rogers Wireless, Telus, Bell and Wind Mobile. As of May 10, 2010 Sprint-Nextel announced that the Nexus One would no longer be available as announced on March 17, 2010 in favor of the HTC Evo 4G.
