steve holcomb eye surgery: Steve going blind if not corrected

Labels: ,

Steve Holcomb piloted his USA-1 sled to a gold medal Saturday in men’s Olympic four-man bobsled.Steve Holcomb reportedly had eye surgery in 2009. He had suffered from degenerative disease that would have resulted in Steve going blind if not corrected.

The U.S. team of Steve Holcomb, Justin Olsen, Steve Mesler and Curtis Tomasevicz captured the first U.S. Olympic gold medal in men’s bobsled in 62 years. That was a good achievement. For over a half century, the U.S team finally grabbed the gold in Men’s bobsled. Congratulations to them.

Holcomb found greater success on the track, he soon discovered that contact lenses and glasses could no longer adequately address his vision problems. Consequently, he often navigated the courses by feel rather than sight. Before the start of 2008-09, Holcomb was diagnosed with keratoconus, a degenerative thinning of the cornea that distorts vision .

In the past the only answer would have been surgery a corneal transplant. Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler told Holcomb he had another choice; a quick painless procedure in which a vitamin solution is combined with light. "By itself, the vitamin, riboflavin, a B vitamin, does nothing .

But when activated by light of a certain wavelength, it has a major impact on the cornea," NBC’s Dr. Bruce Hensel said. Holcomb’s entire procedure took only 20 minutes. “It’s amazing to live life with 20/20 vision, it’s like life in high definition,” Holcomb said.

nanaji deshmukh: leader of Bharatiya Jan Sangh passed away

Nanaji Deshmukh was a leader of Bharatiya Jan Sangh, a social activist and a member of Rajya Sabha. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1999.former Rajya Sabha member Nanaji Deshmukh passed away here on Saturday at the age of 94.

Deshmukh was born on October 11, 1916 in Kadoli, a small town in the Parbhani District of Maharashtra. His family had little money to pay for his tuition fees and books, but his keen desire to learn encouraged him to work as a vendor and sell vegetables to raise money to fund his education.

Nanaji served Deendayal Research Institute that he himself had established way back in 1969. He also established Chitarkoot Gramodya Vishwavidyalaya in Chitrakoot- India's first rural university and was its first Chancellor. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha in the year 1999 in recognition to his services to the nation.

Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has lavished praise on veteran Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Nanaji Deshmukh and the organization started by him, the Deendayal Research Institute (an organization of the Sangh Parivar), for giving the nation the litigation-free model of resolving disputes he had devised.

The President said "In Chitrakoot, I met Nanaji Deshmukh and his team members belonging to the Deendayal Research Institute (DRI). DRI is a unique institution developing and implementing a village development model which is most suited for India," the president said. "Apart from all the development activities, the institute is facilitating a cohesive conflict free society. As a result of this, I understand that the 80 villages around Chitrakoot are almost litigation-free".

"The villagers have unanimously decided that no dispute will find its way to the court. The differences will be sorted out amicably in the village itself. The reason given by Nanaji Deshmukh is that if the people fight among each other, they have no time for development," the President added. "I consider that this model may be propagated in many parts of the country by societal organisations, judicial organisations and government," Kalam contended.

Praising Nanaji Deshmukh for his single-minded devotion to the uplift of the people, Kalam said “what the octogenarian leader was doing at Chitrakoot should be an eye-opener for others.”
