The 2010 Chile earthquake happened off the coast of the Maule Region of Chile,on February 27, 2010 03:34 local time (06:34 UTC).A devastating magnitude-8.8 earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, shattering buildings and bridges, killing at least 85 people and setting off a tsunami that threatened every nation around the Pacific Ocean - roughly a quarter of the globe.
The earthquake was also felt in the Chilean capital Santiago as well as in many Argentinean cities.Tsunami warnings were issued in 53 countries.Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile, declared a "state of catastrophe".Chile's President says that more than 85 people have died in the massive quake.
There was still no word of death or damage from many outlying areas that were cut off by the quake that struck at 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. EST, 0634 GMT) 200 miles (325 kilometers) southwest of Santiago.
The National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for most nations and territories in the Pacific region, including Antarctica.In the Americas, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, and Panama.
A warning was also issued for the Oceania and Pacific Islands nations and territories of American Samoa, Australia, the Cook Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia , Fiji, French Polynesia, Guam, Hawaii, Jarvis Island, Johnston Island, the Kermadec Islands, Kiribati, Marcus Island, the Marshall Islands, Midway Island, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, the Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Pitcairn Islands, Samoa, Tokealu, Tonga, Tuvalu, Wallis and Futuna and Wake Island.
Tsunami warnings are also in effect as far away as East and Southeast Asia including China, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Russia and Taiwan.
